The spread of yoga into the United States began in the 1950s, when Swami Vivekananda, a Westerner trained in India, brought the ancient yoga philosophy to the public. He introduced Hatha yoga to America in the 1890s. In America, the popularity of this form grew, and many more Indian gurus came to the U.S. to introduce new forms of yoga.

Yoga was first developed in India in the 1930s. It was not popular in America until the 1970s when stars like Aldous Huxley or Charlie Chaplin began to take an interest.
